Chelsea host Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on October 31 in Regular Season - 9 of the Premier League, a Matchday 9 fixture as the season takes shape. Chelsea, managed by Xabi Alonso, sit fifth in the table. Manchester United, under M. Carrick, are 16th, so the two sides arrive at opposite ends of the early-season standings.

The most telling factor is recent league form. Chelsea's last five Premier League matches brought two wins, one draw and two defeats. They beat Everton 2-0 away on October 17 and Bournemouth 5-1 at home on October 10, but lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham on October 24 and 3-0 at Brentford on September 18. Manchester United have not won in their last three league matches. They drew 1-1 with Tottenham on October 10, drew 1-1 at Leeds on October 18 and lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth on October 25. In those three league games they scored two goals and conceded five.

Schedule context is the secondary factor. United also played two UEFA Champions League away matches in the same period: a 2-0 loss at Atletico Madrid on October 13 and a 4-1 loss at Como on October 21. That meant a heavy run of fixtures across competitions before the Bournemouth defeat on October 25.
